Sony’s Kraven the Hunter Struggles, Set for Home Release

by Barbara

Sony’s foray into the Marvel Universe appears to be at a standstill, with the release of Kraven the Hunter marking a low point in its superhero film portfolio. The movie, which has drawn heavy criticism, has failed to connect with audiences, earning a meager $59.4 million globally. This makes it the lowest-grossing film in Sony’s Marvel franchise, even trailing behind previous misfires like Morbius and Madame Web.

Despite its poor box office reception, Sony is pushing forward with plans to release Kraven the Hunter on physical media. The film will be available for purchase on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray starting March 4th.

Kraven the Hunter, an action-packed R-rated film, offers an origin story for one of Marvel’s most iconic villains. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven, a man driven by vengeance after a complex and strained relationship with his gangster father, Nikolai Kravinoff, played by Russell Crowe. This journey transforms him into not only the world’s greatest hunter but also one of its most feared figures. Alongside Taylor-Johnson and Crowe, the film also features Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, and Christopher Abbott.

The film’s critical reception has been far from positive, which has contributed to its disappointing box office performance. However, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra has voiced his frustration, placing the blame squarely on the critics and the press for the film’s lackluster performance. Vinciquerra suggested that films like Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter were unfairly bashed by critics, while Venom—despite similar reviews—was embraced by audiences and became a major success. He claimed, “These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”

As Kraven the Hunter heads to home media, Sony hopes that its physical and digital release will help the film find its audience, despite the critical backlash it faced in theaters.
