Tom Rowlands Creates Techno Score for ‘Mussolini Series’

by Barbara

Tom Rowlands, one-half of the iconic electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers, has penned a groundbreaking “techno” score for the upcoming TV series Mussolini: Son of the Century. The series, helmed by director Joe Wright, explores the rise of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, focusing on his early political career, ascent to power, and personal relationships during the 1920s.

Wright enlisted Rowlands to craft a rough-edged, “techno” soundtrack for the eight-part series, which he describes as blending ‘90s rave culture with an avant-garde aesthetic. In an interview, Wright revealed his vision for a series that would defy conventional period drama norms, aiming to create a “punk aesthetic” that captures the raw energy behind Mussolini’s rise and the fascist movement.

The show is based on the bestselling 2018 novel M. Son of the Century by Antonio Scurati, and Rowlands approached the soundtrack with a deep understanding of the book. He called the subject matter “intimidating” but said he was excited to tackle such a challenge. “Composing this soundtrack was a serious task,” Rowlands told. “I was very excited at the idea of taking on a challenge so different from my previous ones, and for a project that started from such a powerful book.”

This isn’t Rowlands’ first foray into film scoring. He previously collaborated with director Darren Aronofsky on the 2010 film Black Swan and worked alongside his Chemical Brothers partner, Ed Simmons, on the stage adaptation of Hanna with Wright in 2011.

For the Mussolini series, Wright sought to reunite with Rowlands to infuse the project with a unique sound, ensuring the series stood apart from traditional period dramas. The soundtrack, released through Sony off-shoot Milan Records, is now available, featuring 20 tracks that embody the rebellious spirit of the story.

The series promises to offer a fresh perspective on one of history’s most notorious figures, driven by a soundtrack that breaks the mold.
