Loosely inspired by the transformation of Japan’s landscape following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, A New Dawn explores the challenges faced by three young individuals as they battle extreme weather, natural disasters, and environmental degradation. At the heart of the story is Keitaro, a young man who, six years after his father’s disappearance, is alone in a closed-down factory, crafting fireworks in search of an elusive connection with his past. The official description from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival highlights the emotional journey of these characters as they forge their own identities amidst the chaos.

Shinomiya revealed in an interview that the idea for A New Dawn had been developing in his mind since 2016. A moment of inspiration occurred when his child pointed out a view of the sea through the trees during a car ride, sparking Shinomiya’s realization of how the landscape of Japan was evolving. “I felt that moment was very meaningful to me, and I believe it was the beginning of this project,” Shinomiya shared.

In developing the film’s scenario, Shinomiya discovered surprising parallels between traditional Japanese painting materials—such as paper, seaweed, and pigments—and the materials used in fireworks before the Edo period. “For pyrotechnicians, there were materials that could be substituted for gunpowder,” Shinomiya noted, expressing his fascination with the cultural continuity between ancient artisan practices and modern technology.

Scheduled for theatrical release in Japan in 2025, A New Dawn promises to be a visually captivating and emotionally rich exploration of Japan’s evolving landscape, both natural and cultural.
