The sequel to 2018’s Den of Thieves, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera brings back Gerard Butler as down-on-his-luck Los Angeles Sheriff Department officer Nick O’Brien, this time chasing the notorious thief Donnie Wilson, portrayed by O’Shea Jackson Jr. Set against the backdrop of a European crime spree, the film follows Donnie as he teams up with the Panther Mafia to target the World Diamond Center, where their plan is to break into an “unbreakable” vault.
In a twist of fate, Nick eventually catches up to Donnie in Nice—but rather than stopping the thief, he joins him in his heist. This dynamic of a reluctant team-up sparks immediate intrigue, appealing to fans of both heist and team-up genres.
One of the standout features of the film is the strong on-screen chemistry between Jackson and Butler. Their interactions, ranging from casual conversation to the meticulous planning of the heist, remain engaging, with their partnership providing much of the film’s appeal. However, certain aspects of the plot—like a forced love triangle and the somewhat awkward transition that brings Nick to Europe—distract from the otherwise compelling narrative.
While the movie excels in its high-stakes, precise heist sequences, it falters in its pacing. At times, the narrative drags or becomes overly self-indulgent, preventing the tension from building at the expected rate for a heist film. Instead of honing in on what works, the film occasionally overreaches.
Despite these missteps, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera offers plenty of thrills. The chemistry between Butler and Jackson shines through, and the intense, time-sensitive heist scenes are a joy to watch. Ultimately, the film delivers an entertaining experience on the big screen, though it could have been even tighter with more focus on its strengths.
