Disney’s ‘Prince Charming’ Live-Action Movie Moves Forward

by Barbara

Disney’s highly anticipated Prince Charming live-action film is officially progressing, with new insights into its plot and casting. Industry insider Daniel Richtman has revealed fresh details about the film, which is set to offer a unique twist on the traditional Prince Charming narrative.

According to Richtman’s Patreon, the movie will center on an animator, portrayed by Twisters star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who creates a Prince Charming character that mysteriously comes to life. This concept bears similarities to two notable films: Life-Size (2000), where a fashion doll springs to life, and Barbie (2023), which explores a self-aware journey of the titular doll in the real world. Edgar-Jones’ role as an animator, potentially working for Disney (though unconfirmed), provides an intriguing perspective on the iconic Prince Charming figure—one that diverges from the traditional Disney approach, which often sidelines love interests in favor of focusing on the heroines.

Filming for the project is slated to begin in 2026 in the UK, according to Richtman.

This Prince Charming film marks Disney’s second attempt at creating a live-action movie based on Cinderella’s love interest. In 2017, Stephen Chbosky, known for his work on Beauty and the Beast (2017), was enlisted to develop a live-action project centered on Prince Charming, tentatively titled Charming. This version, written by Matt Fogel, would have told the story from the perspective of Prince Charming’s brother, who struggled to live up to his family legacy. However, the project was ultimately scrapped, with the new film steering clear of the earlier version’s narrative.

Notably, Disney has confirmed that Prince Charming will not be directly tied to the Cinderella franchise, despite the character’s origin in the 1950 animated film. Instead, the plot will focus on Edgar-Jones’ animator character, who is expected to become the romantic interest of the Prince Charming character played by Chris Hemsworth.

Directed by Wonka filmmaker Paul King, Prince Charming will also feature a screenplay co-written by Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker. Hemsworth joined the project shortly after its initial announcement. The movie promises to offer a fresh take on the Disney live-action remake trend, which has been dominated by faithful retellings of animated classics. This film shares similarities with the 2021 release Cruella, which reinvented the 101 Dalmatians villain as an ambitious fashion designer, played by Emma Stone.

Looking ahead, Disney has two major live-action remakes set for release in 2025. The first is Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, which is slated to hit theaters in March. Later in the year, Lilo & Stitch will make its live-action debut, marking the studio’s first remake of a 21st-century animated feature.

At this time, no official release date has been announced for Prince Charming.
