“Aftermath”: Dylan Sprouse Leads Explosive Action Thriller on Netflix

by Barbara

Netflix has increasingly become a hub for action-packed content, with recent successes like Rebel Ridge and Carry-On solidifying its place as a powerhouse in the genre. The streaming giant is poised to add another thrilling ride to its repertoire with the upcoming release of Aftermath, a high-octane B-movie action flick starring Dylan Sprouse, known for his roles in Big Daddy and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. While it may not reach the same critical acclaim as some of Netflix’s other action offerings, the film promises an exhilarating experience for fans of the genre.

Aftermath, set to premiere on Netflix on February 10, 2025, follows the story of a war veteran suffering from PTSD who becomes a hostage on Boston’s Tobin Memorial Bridge after a bomb explodes. As the tension escalates, Sprouse’s character must rely on his military training to save his sister and fellow captives from a group of vengeful ex-soldiers led by a ruthless war criminal. The film, directed by Patrick Lussier, marks his return to action filmmaking following projects like Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine, and The Purge TV series.

Written by Nathan Graham Davis, Aftermath boasts a notable supporting cast including Mason Gooding (Scream), Dichen Lachman (Jurassic World Dominion), Megan Stott (Yes Day), and Ashley Pynn (Mean Girls). While Sprouse leads the charge, his performance and the film’s gripping premise have already generated attention among action enthusiasts.

The film’s premise has drawn comparisons to Die Hard, with several viewers noting its similarities to the 1987 classic, which starred Bruce Willis. Letterboxd users have praised Aftermath for its “chamber action” and relentless intensity, with some likening its pacing and protagonist’s PTSD struggle to that of Willis’ iconic character. “A great under-the-radar Die Hard chamber action film,” wrote Letterboxd user Nicholas G., highlighting the story’s fast pace and political undertones that echo themes from Nothing Lasts Forever, the novel that inspired Die Hard.

Others have emphasized the film’s charm despite its modest budget. Nicholas Kuhn mentioned the film’s elements reminiscent of Die Hard, noting the presence of military contractors and government corruption, while praising its visual effects. Rossboyask also described Aftermath as “super-fun,” adding that it “works better than it should” given its premise, and commended its humor and visual appeal.

While Aftermath may not be a critical darling like Rebel Ridge, its mix of explosive action, tense thrills, and comparisons to a beloved action classic could make it a standout for action fans when it arrives on Netflix in February.
