Norman Lear’s Final Project ‘Clean Slate’ to Premiere on Prime Video

by Barbara

Norman Lear’s legacy continues with the release of Clean Slate, a heartfelt drama starring Laverne Cox and George Wallace, set to premiere on Prime Video next month. The series delves into the complex dynamics of a father-daughter relationship that spans decades of estrangement.

In Clean Slate, Wallace plays Harry, an old-school, outspoken car wash owner from Mobile, Alabama, who must adapt to his estranged daughter Desiree’s world. Desiree, portrayed by Cox, is a proud trans woman whose sudden appearance at Harry’s doorstep challenges his conservative views. What was supposed to be a brief visit becomes an extended stay when Desiree’s art gallery in New York City loses funding, forcing her to move in with her father.

The show explores Desiree’s efforts to rebuild her bond with Harry, while navigating the complexities of her identity within the local church and her strained friendship with Louis (D.K. Uzoukwu), the choir director. Meanwhile, a budding romance emerges with Mack (Jay Wilkison), Harry’s second-in-command, who is drawn to Desiree, as well as with Opal (Norah Murphy), Mack’s daughter, who dreams of escaping Mobile for a bigger life.

The series also touches on Harry’s own emotional growth, as he forms a connection with Louis’ mother, Ella (Telma Hopkins), and continues his ongoing rivalry with his neighbor, Miguel (Philip Garcia).

Clean Slate is co-created by Cox, Wallace, and Dan Ewen (Dear Santa), who also serves as executive producer alongside Lear and Brent Miller, president of production and development for Lear’s ACT III Productions. Ewen shares the role of co-showrunner with executive producer Simran Baidwan.

With Lear’s passing on December 5, 2023, at the age of 101, Clean Slate stands as one of his final contributions to television. All eight episodes of the series will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting February 5.
