A24’s “The Brutalist” has once again caught the spotlight with the release of a new trailer, offering a tantalizing glimpse into a world where lives are transformed. The narrative of this postwar epic follows Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian – born Jewish architect, and his wife Elzbert. Having fled Europe in the aftermath of World War II, they set their sights on the United States, eager to restart their careers and be part of the birth of modern America. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with the enigmatic and wealthy Harrison Lee Van Buren, played by Guy Pearce. Van Buren presents Toth with a contract that will shape the next three decades of his life.
Last year, the film made a remarkable debut in four theaters across New York and Los Angeles. It sold out nearly 30 shows over a three – day weekend, raking in $266,800, with an opening weekend of $66,700. This achievement was only surpassed by “Anola” and “The Kind”. Despite being set in mid – 20th – century postwar America, the film has managed to attract a wide audience, including the younger demographic.
After its premiere in Venice, “The Brutalist” received a resounding 13 – minute standing ovation. Critics have been effusive in their praise, hailing it as “a masterpiece of American epic” and comparing it to timeless classics such as “There Will Be Blood”, “Once Upon a Time in America”, and “The Godfather”. At the recently announced 82nd Golden Globe Awards, the film claimed three prestigious awards: Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor. This month, “The Brutalist” is set to expand its reach by making its way into IMAX theaters in North America, promising an even more immersive experience for movie – goers.
