Wicklow-based filmmaker Dave Thomas has revealed the first glimpse of his upcoming short film, Seven Moments in Time, which delves into the generational divide and the powerful connections that can form in the most unlikely of encounters.
Filmed on location in Arklow and Woodenbridge, Seven Moments in Time follows the story of an elderly man who finds comfort in his weekly ritual of sitting on a park bench. His quiet routine is disrupted by a lively teenager, representing the energy and creativity of the younger generation. The film portrays the tension and misunderstandings that arise between them, emphasizing the cultural and lifestyle barriers separating their worlds.
A key moment in the film sees the young man attempting to share his rap song—a modern piece filled with references that the elderly man struggles to understand—further accentuating their generational divide. However, over the course of the film, their relationship evolves through small, simple gestures: a shared sandwich, a cup of tea, and a lighthearted joke. These acts of kindness and connection help bridge the gap between the two characters, highlighting the universal need for companionship and mutual understanding.
Directed, written, and produced by Thomas, Seven Moments in Time stars Pat Nolan, a familiar name in both stage and screen acting, alongside up-and-coming talent Daniel Ryan. Róisín Bohan and Michael O’Mara also offer supporting roles in the film. The project was shot at various locations in Arklow, Woodenbridge, and Woodenbridge Hotel & Lodge, with contributions from a generous GoFundMe campaign and support from local organizations such as Arklow Municipal District, Donut Express Ireland, and Unique Café.
“This film advocates for empathy and understanding between generations, encouraging society to foster deeper connections,” said Thomas. “I was fortunate to work with such a talented cast and crew, and I am deeply grateful for the generous support from the community and donors. This film is a reflection of that spirit.”
Thomas, who funded part of the film through his own savings, expressed his commitment to creating a high-quality film that tells an important story while showcasing the beauty of Arklow and County Wicklow to an international audience.
Seven Moments in Time is produced by Thomas through his film production company, Bella Vision Ltd., trading as Dave Thomas Films, based in Arklow. The film has already been submitted to numerous Oscar-qualifying national and international festivals, including the prestigious Galway Film Fleadh. As the film enters the festival circuit, Thomas hopes that its selection in major festivals will spark global conversations about the importance of bridging generational gaps.
