Charles Burnett’s “The Annihilation of Fish” Gets Long-Awaited 4K Release

by Barbara

Acclaimed filmmaker Charles Burnett’s long-hidden feature, The Annihilation of Fish, is getting a long-awaited 4K restoration and theatrical release, nearly 25 years after its original debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

First shown in 1999, the film was initially acquired for distribution but was quickly shelved after a single negative review in Variety. As a result, The Annihilation of Fish has remained unseen by audiences in any format for nearly three decades. Now, thanks to efforts from the UCLA Film & Television Archive and The Film Foundation, the film is set to return to the big screen in a new 4K version, premiering on February 14 at BAM in Brooklyn.

Starring Lynn Redgrave as Poinsettia, a reclusive former housewife with a rich fantasy life involving 19th-century composer Giacomo Puccini, the film follows her journey as she moves into a Los Angeles boarding house. There, she meets Fish, a Jamaican widower played by James Earl Jones, recently released from a mental institution after battling unseen demons. Together, they form a bond, exploring themes of love, mental illness, and personal transformation in a tender and comedic narrative.

Adapted from a short story by Anthony C. Winkler, The Annihilation of Fish was described as a “tender comedy” that explores complex issues with humor and depth. Burnett’s first venture into comedy, the film’s blend of race, aging, and mental health, presented through chaotic yet heartfelt energy, continues to resonate in its restored version.

Reflecting on the film’s long journey to release, Burnett shared his thoughts with IndieWire. “I’m curious how audiences will receive it, as it’s been locked away for so long,” he said. “I think every independent filmmaker has faced similar struggles trying to get their work distributed, so I don’t feel like an exception. But I’m saddened that Lynn Redgrave isn’t here to enjoy this moment.” Burnett also expressed his appreciation for the cast and crew, particularly the late Paul Heller, a producer who dedicated a decade to the film.

Burnett, who was awarded the Governor’s Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017, is recognized as one of the most influential independent filmmakers. His work on The Annihilation of Fish highlights his ability to tackle complex themes with grace and humor.

The film was restored from its 35mm original picture negative by UCLA restorationist Jillian Borders, with laboratory services provided by FotoKem, Roundabout Entertainment, and others. Milestone Films and Kino Lorber are leading the restoration’s release, timed to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary and Burnett’s 80th birthday.

In a statement, Burnett expressed his gratitude to the people who worked tirelessly over the years to bring The Annihilation of Fish back to life. “This release means a great deal to everyone involved, especially the late Paul Heller, who spent ten years producing the film. I want to thank Milestone Films, UCLA Film & Television Archive, The Film Foundation, and the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation for their dedication to restoring and releasing this unique story,” Burnett said.

The restored 4K version of The Annihilation of Fish will premiere in theaters on February 14, with screenings at BAM. Fans of Burnett’s work and cinephiles alike are encouraged to witness this cinematic gem, which showcases the unexpected connection between two isolated individuals as they navigate love and life.
