Charlie Cox of Daredevil Reveals His Dream DC Character: The Joker

by Barbara Miller

Charlie Cox, well – known for his portrayal of Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil, has opened up about which DC character he would love to play. Cox first brought the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to life in 2015 in Netflix’s “Daredevil” season 1, sparking a Marvel sub – franchise. Since then, he has reprised the role in two more seasons of the solo show, “The Defenders”, and made cameos in the MCU’s “Spider – Man: No Way Home” and “She – Hulk: Attorney At Law”. Now, he stars in the MCU – set “Daredevil: Born Again” in Phase 5, where he’ll face off against formidable foes like Kingpin, Bullseye, and Muse.

At the “Daredevil: Born Again” panel during FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024, Cox was quizzed about his desired DC character. He confessed that while it would be a daunting task, he’d relish the opportunity to play the Joker. Cox also lauded Heath Ledger’s Oscar – winning performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”. He stated, “I wouldn’t want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they’re so brilliant, but I was thinking like, the Joker would be a lot of fun… If you could find a way to do something… You know, I mean, Heath Ledger for me nailed that part obviously… If you could find a new take on it in some way that would be cool.”

Cox’s comments about the Joker raise interesting possibilities for the DCU. Currently, Cox might be tied up with his Daredevil role in the MCU for the next few years. With Daredevil potentially remaining an active hero until at least “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027, he may not be immediately available for a DC role. However, once his MCU journey concludes, he could be a viable candidate for the Joker. The DCU’s Joker casting is still up in the air. Batman is set to debut in Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold” after cameos in “Creature Commandos”, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the Joker will be introduced simultaneously. Given the Joker’s frequent appearances in DC movies, James Gunn’s DCU might delay bringing in the Clown Prince of Crime, making the timing of Cox’s potential casting, if any, uncertain.
