The 2024 remake of the 1922 horror classic, “Nosferatu”, directed by Robert Eggers, has reached a significant box – office milestone. Starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, the film has raked in over $155 million globally. The story follows Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), an 1830s estate agent who travels to Transylvania to meet Count Orlok, leaving his wife Ellen (Lily – Rose Depp) to confront a menacing force endangering her life.
“Nosferatu” has received generally favorable reviews, with critics lauding its disturbing visuals and atmospheric ambiance. It has also been recognized in the 2024 – 2025 awards season, earning nominations for 5 BAFTA awards and 4 Critics’ Choice awards. According to The Numbers, in the highly competitive horror film market, “Nosferatu” has stood out. Its earnings have been consistent, showing a global allure. International markets, particularly the United Kingdom and Mexico, have contributed significantly to its total, helping it outpace another major 2024 horror release, “Smile 2”, which grossed $137.9 million.
The box – office performance of “Nosferatu” is remarkable, especially considering it was initially thought to target a niche audience. In nearly four weeks in theaters, it has maintained a steady presence, becoming the second highest – grossing film for Focus Features. Lacking the support of a major franchise or extensive marketing, it still managed to secure an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. When compared to “Smile 2”, which had success due to its familiarity and positive reviews (with an 86% RT score), “Nosferatu”‘s ability to quickly surpass its earnings is telling. This could suggest a shift in audience preferences, with “Nosferatu”‘s re – imagining of the classic tale appealing more broadly on an international scale.
