A recent update has clarified Patrick Dempsey’s potential return to Scream 7. In the 2022 legacy sequel of the slasher franchise, it was disclosed that the long-standing final girl, Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), is married to a Mark, which led many to assume it was Dempsey’s character, detective Mark Kincaid from Scream 3. However, it was recently revealed that the forthcoming Scream 7, currently being filmed under director Kevin Williamson, has cast Joel McHale from Community as Mark, and his character’s last name is Evans.
After contacting representatives from both the production company Spyglass and Patrick Dempsey himself, they found out that the actor won’t be featured in the movie at all. Despite Dempsey hinting during an October 2024 appearance on Today that he had been approached to reprise his role from Scream 3, the negotiations ultimately fell apart.
Ultimately, it seems very likely that before the negotiations broke down, Sidney’s husband Mark was intended to be played by Patrick Dempsey. The 2022 legacy sequel set the stage for the potential return of several legacy characters, one of which did happen when Hayden Panettiere’s Scream 4 character, Kirby Reed, who was presumed dead after being stabbed twice in the stomach by Ghostface, eventually reprised her role in 2023’s Scream VI.
However, for the upcoming movie, the Scream cast is generally taking a different path. The Carpenter sisters, played by Melissa Barrera (who was controversially fired after sharing pro-Palestine posts on social media) and Jenna Ortega, will not be featured. While legacy characters such as Sidney, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), Chad (Mason Gooding), and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) will be making a comeback, they will be surrounded by a new cast. Even though Kirby survived the events of the 2023 sequel, her return has not been confirmed.
