Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, which delves into the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the 1975 Emergency, has experienced a further dip in its box office earnings on its first Tuesday. The film’s total India collections have now reached ₹12.40 crore following a decline in daily takings, recording ₹2.5 crore on its opening day, ₹3.6 crore on day two, ₹4.25 crore on day three, ₹1.05 crore on day four, and approximately ₹1 crore on day five.
On Tuesday, the film reported a modest 7.09% overall occupancy across theatres. Morning shows saw an occupancy rate of 4.72%, while afternoon shows fared slightly better with 6.92%. Evening and night shows had occupancy rates of 7.83% and 8.87%, respectively, as per film trade portal Sacnilk.
Although Emergency continues to show a decrease in its daily earnings, it has managed to outperform the debut film Azaad by Aaman Devgn and Rasha Thadani. Azaad, which has earned ₹5.75 crore at the domestic box office so far, posted a 6.60% occupancy on Tuesday. Despite its ongoing decline, Emergency has surpassed Azaad’s numbers, but the former still faces the challenge of sustaining momentum to recover its ₹60 crore budget. Currently, the film has recouped just 20.78% of its production cost.
Notably, Emergency is Kangana Ranaut’s highest-grossing film since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her previous releases such as Thalaivii (₹7.28 crore), Dhaakad (₹2.58 crore), and Tejas (₹4.14 crore) had failed to make a significant impact at the box office.
Directed by Ranaut herself, Emergency features a strong supporting cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, the late Satish Kaushik, Mahima Chaudhry, and Vishak Nair. The film, which hit theatres on January 17, aims to provide an intense portrayal of the political crisis that shook India in 1975.
