Cineverse has announced that “The Toxic Avenger,” a reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 cult classic, is set to arrive in theaters in 2025. Directed by Macon Blair, known for his work on I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, and starring Peter Dinklage in the lead role, this new version of the iconic film promises a mix of dark humor, action, and unique storytelling.
Blair expressed his gratitude toward the team behind the project, acknowledging their support throughout the search for the ideal distribution partner. “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters,” Blair said. “It’s a fun, rowdy movie that you want to experience with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family!”
The director emphasized his commitment to honoring the original spirit of The Toxic Avenger, while also introducing fresh elements. “Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie… and at the same time, make something that Troma fans would dig and do something that feels fresh,” Blair continued. “Lloyd and Michael at Troma have been a blast to work with, and I can’t wait to start working with Cinverse to bring this version of Toxie to fans new and old.”
In this new iteration, Peter Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a janitor who, following a freak accident, becomes the mutated vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his signature mop, Toxie takes on an assortment of villains, including freaks, gangsters, and corrupt CEOs, all while struggling to maintain his relationship with his son. The official synopsis describes the film as maintaining the subversive, gonzo energy of the original while offering a contemporary twist.
Joining Dinklage in the film are Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Taylour Paige. Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman praised the reboot, declaring that Blair’s version surpasses the original in creativity and excitement. “Troma fans will be ecstatic!” Kaufman said.
Cineverse’s chairman and CEO, Chris McGurk, also lauded the film’s potential, noting that it speaks to current societal anxieties with its bold humor and daring direction. “Peter Dinklage’s transformative performance and Macon Blair’s fearless direction deliver a story that speaks to the anxieties of our time with outrageous humor,” McGurk commented. “This is the kind of movie that major studios shy away from, but Cineverse is committed to championing such uncompromising storytelling.”
Macon Blair wrote the screenplay, based on Kaufman’s original work. The film’s production team includes Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Kaufman, and Michael Herz. Executive producers are Andrew Pfeffer, Jay Ashenfelter, and Blair. The film’s behind-the-scenes talent includes cinematographer Dana Gonzalez, production designer Alexander Cameron, and editors Brett W. Bachman and James Thomas. Visual effects were supervised by Chris Ritvo, with costume design by Vanessa Porter, and the musical score provided by Will Blair and Brooke Blair.
Cineverse secured the U.S. and Canadian theatrical, home entertainment, and streaming rights through a deal with Legendary Entertainment. The deal was negotiated by Cineverse’s Gary Loffredo, Yolanda Macias, and Brandon Hill, with CAA Media Finance representing the filmmakers.
The release of The Toxic Avenger in 2025 is set to deliver an exhilarating and boundary-pushing experience that promises to captivate audiences, old and new, with its unique blend of humor, action, and social commentary.
