Netflix is diversifying its unscripted offerings with the launch of Offline Love, a unique Japanese dating series that challenges the conventional norms of modern romance by eliminating digital devices. Set to premiere globally on February 18, the 10-episode series takes place in the picturesque city of Nice, France, where 10 singles will spend 10 days searching for meaningful connections. The catch? No smartphones, no social media—just analog interactions in a foreign setting.
This groundbreaking show marks the hosting debut of Kyoko Koizumi, a veteran of Japanese entertainment, who will guide the audience through the romantic journey alongside the comedy duo Reiwa Roman. The pair will offer studio commentary throughout the series, providing both humor and insightful commentary.
“I’ve never been drawn to romance reality shows, but this concept is captivating,” said Koizumi, reflecting on how participants must rely solely on handwritten letters, promises, and chance encounters to form connections. “I grew up without a smartphone, and I believe that made every moment more meaningful,” she added, bringing a nostalgic perspective from a pre-digital era.
Reiwa Roman’s Kuruma Takahira offered a broader perspective, likening Offline Love to a “grand social experiment” rather than a typical dating series. He emphasized how participants will undergo “the ultimate digital detox” in a foreign environment. His comedy partner, Kemuri Matsui, 31, highlighted the generational gap, noting, “I can’t imagine romance without social media, messaging apps, emails, or phone calls.”
Offline Love adds to Netflix’s growing library of Asia Pacific unscripted content, which has been gaining international attention. The streaming platform recently renewed its Japanese same-sex dating series The Boyfriend for a second season, while Single’s Inferno, a Korean reality show, has made waves by securing the sixth spot in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) after its January 14 premiere. Fans of unscripted content can also look forward to upcoming seasons of Culinary Class Wars and Physical: 100.
The series features Gracie Abrams’ song “Us,” which features Taylor Swift, as its theme track. Produced by East Inc., Offline Love is poised to offer a refreshing twist on the traditional dating genre.
