Magic: The Gathering, the iconic trading card game that has captivated players since 1993, is set to expand beyond the tabletop into the world of film and television. Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind blockbuster franchises like Godzilla and Dune, has partnered with Hasbro Entertainment to create a new “live-action feature film and television universe” based on the fantasy game.
The first step in the ambitious project will be a feature film, with a broader multimedia universe to follow. Hasbro, which estimates the Magic: The Gathering brand to be worth over $1 billion, boasts a dedicated player base of more than 50 million worldwide.
“We take great pride in being thoughtful custodians of beloved intellectual properties, and few fit that description better than Magic: The Gathering,” said Mary Parent, Legendary’s Head of Worldwide Production. “Together with Hasbro, we look forward to building a universe that not only delights longtime fans but also attracts a new generation of enthusiasts.”
Zev Foreman, Head of Film at Hasbro, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, calling it a “dynamic and complementary partnership” that brings together one of the world’s most recognizable brands with an experienced and trusted production team.
Legendary Entertainment’s history in successful franchise-building includes its work on the MonsterVerse, which includes Godzilla and King Kong, as well as major releases such as Detective Pikachu and Enola Holmes.
With the Magic: The Gathering universe poised to enter a new era, fans can expect a blend of magic, strategy, and adventure to come to life in thrilling new ways.
