Green Day’s “New Years Rev” Comedy Film in the Works

by Barbara

Live Nation Productions, known for hit music-related films such as A Star Is Born, the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream, and Love, Lizzo, is set to bring a new comedy to the big screen in collaboration with iconic punk-rock band Green Day. The film, titled New Years Rev, is based on the band’s early touring days and promises to tug at the heartstrings of Green Day fans.

Green Day, who catapulted to fame with their 1994 album Dookie and later revitalized their career with American Idiot, has had a decorated career, with five Grammy Awards, a Broadway adaptation of American Idiot, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, the band is expanding its creative portfolio by venturing into film.

New Years Rev follows three friends who embark on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing they are set to open for Green Day. The comedic journey will be portrayed by actors Mason Thames (of The Black Phone), Kylr Coffman (Outbreak), and Ryan Foust (The Goldfinch), with The Office stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey also joining the cast. The film is currently in production in Oklahoma.

In a statement about the project, Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shared his excitement, reflecting on the band’s humble beginnings: “Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep, then play a show for 10 kids in a basement 50 miles from anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that, because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

Live Nation Productions’ Head of Film and TV, Ryan Kroft, described New Years Rev as a “coming-of-age story” for aspiring musicians. He emphasized that the film captures the essence of chasing a dream: “Long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fueling their journey. It’s a tribute to the magic of live music, brought to life by an incredible cast.”

New Years Rev is shaping up to be an exciting, heartfelt journey that will resonate with fans of Green Day and anyone who has ever chased a dream in the world of music.
