Matthew Rhys, known for his roles in The Americans and Perry Mason, is set to star as the mayor of a mysterious New England island in Widow’s Bay, a new supernatural series coming to Apple TV+. The show comes from acclaimed writer Katie Dippold, best known for her work on The Heat, Ghostbusters, and Parks and Recreation, alongside director Hiro Murai, famed for his work on Atlanta, Station Eleven, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Set in a quaint island community with aspirations of becoming a Nantucket-level tourist destination, Widow’s Bay revolves around Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys), a pragmatic single father who is tasked with managing a town full of superstitious citizens. While the island’s magical beliefs could derail its ambitious goals, Loftis must navigate both the town’s finances and its mystical inhabitants’ deep-rooted faith in the supernatural.
Dippold will serve as the showrunner and executive producer, with Murai, Rhys, Claudia Shin, and Carver Karaszewski also producing. Joanne Toll will co-executive produce, under the umbrella of Apple Studios.
Rhys, who has stayed busy since the end of The Americans, recently appeared in the HBO reboot of Perry Mason and is slated to star alongside John Krasinski in the upcoming Prime Video series Silent River. He’s also ventured into voice work, lending his talents to animated series such as The Watchmen, BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, among others.
Given the creative team behind Widow’s Bay, the show promises a blend of supernatural intrigue and humor, combining Rhys’ versatility with Dippold’s sharp wit and Murai’s distinctive comedic style. Whether the series leans into its supernatural elements or delivers more laughs remains to be seen, but fans can expect an engaging mix of mystery and comedy.
