It’s been over two years since the announcement of Constantine 2, a long-awaited sequel that will bring Keanu Reeves back as DC’s enigmatic demon hunter, John Constantine. While updates have been few and far between, director Francis Lawrence recently provided a promising update on the project’s status.
Timed with the 4K release of the original Constantine film, Lawrence confirmed that the sequel is moving forward, albeit at a deliberate pace.
“We are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. Akiva, Keanu, and I are super, super excited about it,” Lawrence shared, referring to the film’s core creative team. Akiva Goldsman, who is also producing the film, will pen the screenplay.
When asked about the direction of the sequel, Lawrence revealed that the team is drawing inspiration from both the Hellblazer comics and their own passion for the character. “We have a great idea. We’ve gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things. I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, stories, and characters we love,” he explained.
The announcement of Constantine 2 in 2023 was met with excitement, but the project faced significant hurdles, notably due to industry strikes that caused delays. Lawrence previously discussed these challenges in an interview, explaining the complexities of regaining control of the character and the rights to the Vertigo Comics material. “We had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control now,” he said.
The 2005 Constantine film, which loosely adapted the Hellblazer comics, grossed $230 million worldwide against a $100 million budget, cementing its status as a cult classic. Fans have been eagerly awaiting Reeves’ return to the role, and despite the delays, Lawrence, Goldsman, and Reeves remain committed to the sequel.
With the team expressing renewed enthusiasm and creative drive, Constantine 2 is inching closer to becoming a reality.
