Netflix Developing New Dungeons & Dragons Series “The Forgotten Realms”

by Barbara

Netflix has officially confirmed the development of a new live-action series based on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe. Titled The Forgotten Realms, the series promises to transport viewers to one of the franchise’s most beloved campaign settings, known for its rich lore and legendary characters.

Producer Shawn Levy, known for his work on Stranger Things, Deadpool, and Wolverine, will helm the series in partnership with writer and showrunner Drew Crevello (The Grudge 2). Hasbro Entertainment is also on board to bring this fantasy adventure to life.

Although plot details remain under wraps, sources indicate that The Forgotten Realms will explore the expansive and magical world central to the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The series will delve into the realm’s storied history, featuring some of the most famous characters and adventures from the D&D universe.

This marks a shift for the project, which was initially announced two years ago under a different streaming platform. In early 2023, The Forgotten Realms received a straight-to-series order, with eOne co-producing alongside Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the successful Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. However, the series was stalled due to changes in ownership at eOne. Following this setback, Levy took the project to Netflix, where it has now been revived.

While Hasbro and Netflix have not yet commented on the series’ development, fans are eagerly awaiting more information on the project’s cast, release timeline, and other details.

Since its creation by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974, Dungeons & Dragons has grown into a cultural phenomenon, inspiring films, television, novels, and countless tabletop adventures. Between 2000 and 2012, three films based on the game were released, but The Forgotten Realms will mark a new chapter for the franchise in live-action television.

As the series takes shape, Levy remains a busy figure in Hollywood, also set to direct the remake of John Carpenter’s Starman and oversee the final season of Stranger Things.
