Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped an exciting new trailer for A Minecraft Movie during the NBA All-Star Game, giving fans a glimpse into the live-action adaptation of the wildly popular game. The trailer, which aired Sunday, features an all-star cast including Jason Momoa as Garrett Garrison, a garbage man thrust into an extraordinary world, Jack Black as the iconic Steve, Sebastian Hansen as Henry, and more.
The film’s official description teases, “In this world, creativity is key to survival,” promising a thrilling adventure that combines the blocky world of Minecraft with live-action drama. Fans will be able to catch more of the movie during NBA All-Star Weekend, with the movie hitting theaters on April 4, 2025.
Bringing Minecraft to Life
The highly anticipated film is directed by Jared Hess, best known for his work on Nacho Libre. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, A Minecraft Movie brings the famous game’s sandbox world to the big screen. Along with Momoa and Black, the movie stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar-nominated Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Hansen (Just Mercy), and the beloved Jennifer Coolidge.
Set in the world of Minecraft, the film follows four misfit characters—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—who are struggling with their daily lives when a mysterious portal transports them into the game’s expansive Overworld. In this strange new realm, survival is dependent on creativity, and the group must work together to navigate challenges posed by Piglins, Zombies, and other threats. To succeed in their mission and return home, they must team up with Steve (Black), an expert crafter who teaches them how to thrive in the blocky universe.
A Star-Studded Team Behind the Scenes
The creative forces behind A Minecraft Movie include a talented production team, with Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, and Jason Momoa among the producers. Executive producers include Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, Jonathan Spaihts, Pete Chiappetta, Andrew Lary, and Anthony Tittanegro.
The film’s technical team boasts impressive credentials, with Enrique Chediak (127 Hours, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) handling cinematography, and Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) overseeing the film’s visual style. Editing is led by James Thomas (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Borat), while Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (The Jungle Book, The Batman) ensures the visual effects are groundbreaking. Amanda Neale (The Meg, What We Do in the Shadows) designs the costumes, and music for the film is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, LEGO Movies), with music supervision by Gabe Hilfer and Karyn Rachtman.
