Sky is gearing up to launch Small Town, Big Story, a new six-episode dramedy starring Chris O’Dowd, known for his role in The IT Crowd. Set in the fictional Irish town of Drumban, the series promises to blend humor and drama with a dash of mystery. O’Dowd not only stars but also created the show, drawing on personal experiences and his reflections during the pandemic.
The star-studded cast includes Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, who plays Wendy Patterson, and Paddy Considine, best known for his role in House of the Dragon, as Seamus Proctor. Ruth McCabe, famed for her role in Silent Witness, also joins the ensemble as Betty Battles. McCabe’s career includes memorable roles in The Snapper and My Left Foot.
The series, set in the rural Irish village of Drumban, follows the upheaval that ensues when a Hollywood production descends on the town, uncovering a secret that has been hidden for decades. The cast also features Eileen Walsh, Leia Murphy, David Rawle, Patrick Martins, Evanne Kilgallon, Andrew Bennett, and David Wilmot.
O’Dowd shared his inspiration for the show in an interview, describing the series as a reflection on his personal ties to both Hollywood and Ireland. He recounted writing the show during the depths of the pandemic while in lockdown in Canada, a time when he felt creatively adrift. “It was a period of not being in control, just trying to keep awake and write down all the thoughts flowing through me,” O’Dowd explained.
Small Town, Big Story is set to premiere on Sky in the UK and Ireland on Thursday, February 27.
