Tom Cruise’s Final ‘Mission: Impossible’ Film Weighs Cannes Premiere

by Barbara

The Cannes Film Festival may soon see one of Hollywood’s biggest stars take the stage. Although no official decision has been made, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is reportedly considering a world premiere at the prestigious festival. If confirmed, the appearance would mark a significant moment for the event, potentially injecting Tom Cruise’s star power into the French Riviera’s spotlight. Paramount, which declined to comment on the matter, is set to release the highly anticipated film in theaters on May 21, coinciding with the festival’s second week. This installment is expected to be Cruise’s final portrayal of IMF agent Ethan Hunt.

Paramount has long been associated with Cannes, and Cruise shares a rich history with the festival. His last appearance in 2022, for Top Gun: Maverick, was a resounding success. The film went on to gross $1.45 billion globally, garnered six Oscar nominations, and won an Academy Award for Best Sound.

The Cannes lineup for 2025 could feature a number of highly anticipated American films. Notable entries include Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” starring Denzel Washington, which will be distributed by A24 and AppleTV+; Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” with an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, and Scarlett Johansson, from Focus and Universal Pictures; Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” which explores the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic film Breathless; and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother,” starring Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, and Tom Waits, set for release by Mubi.

However, not all big-name films are likely to make their debut at Cannes. Sources indicate that Apple’s much-anticipated Brad Pitt racing drama, F1, will likely not premiere at the festival.

Under the guidance of longtime artistic director Thierry Fremaux, Cannes has continued to thrive, hosting world premieres for major films such as Sean Baker’s Anora and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez. However, commercial blockbusters have had mixed results at the festival. While Top Gun: Maverick benefitted from its Cannes debut, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny struggled with a lukewarm reception ahead of its 2023 release.
