Blue Finch Films has released the official trailer for “Brief History of a Family,” an engrossing Chinese thriller making its way to UK cinemas. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the film has already graced the screens of prestigious festivals such as Berlin, Atlanta, Sydney, Melbourne, Zurich, and Karlovy Vary.
Set in post-one-child policy China, “Brief History of a Family” delves into the life of a middle-class family whose once-stable existence is disrupted by the introduction of an enigmatic young boy. The film, written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Jianjie Lin in his feature directorial debut, explores the unraveling of family dynamics, buried secrets, and emotional turmoil.
The narrative centers on Wei, an outgoing and charismatic only child, and Shuo, a reserved and observant classmate. Following a school incident, the two boys form an unlikely bond, with Shuo soon becoming a frequent visitor at Wei’s family home. As Shuo immerses himself deeper into their lives, he begins to notice unsettling signs—unspoken truths, unmet expectations, and neglected emotions that threaten the seemingly perfect façade of Wei’s family.
With an underlying atmosphere of tension, the film gradually peels back layers of the family’s carefully constructed image, exposing painful past wounds and mounting anxieties. As a tragic event disrupts their fragile balance, the film takes a closer look at how secrets, both old and new, can fracture relationships and shape lives.
Featuring standout performances by Zu Feng, Guo Keyu, Sun Xilun, and Lin Muran, “Brief History of a Family” is further elevated by its striking cinematography, captured by the talented Jiahao Zhang. The film has garnered significant praise for its compelling narrative and the way it draws audiences into its complex emotional landscape.
Produced by Ying Lou, Yiwen Wang, and Yue Zheng, this indie gem is a must-watch for fans of thought-provoking cinema. “Brief History of a Family” will be released in UK cinemas on March 21, 2025, though a US release date has yet to be announced.
