“There’s a Zombie Outside”: A Meta-Horror Exploration of Identity

by Barbara

In an intriguing blend of horror and introspection, writer, director, and producer Michael Varrati brings audiences There’s a Zombie Outside, a new film that toes the line between cult cinema and psychological exploration. Set to hit digital and cable VOD platforms on March 4, 2025, the movie promises a unique take on the zombie genre, featuring a star-studded cast led by Ben Baur, Phylicia Wissa, Danny Plotner, Ty Chen, Francisco Chacin, William Lott, Tiffany Shepis, and Peaches Christ.

The plot of There’s a Zombie Outside revolves around a man whose deep connection with cult cinema is tested when he begins to question the line between reality and fiction. Convinced that a monster from his movies is haunting his world, the protagonist struggles with his identity and perceptions of reality, pushing him to examine the very foundations of his existence.

The film’s unsettling premise has already caught the attention of critics. In her mini-review for Popcorn Frights last August, Meagan Navarro noted the movie’s strong horror elements, including notable performances by Tiffany Shepis as Officer Findlay and Peaches Christ, alongside iconic voice cameos from Lori Cardille (Day of the Dead) and Elizabeth Coffey (Pink Flamingos). Navarro praised the film’s effective use of a stalking zombie, particularly a memorable make-out scene that plays on the boundaries between fiction and reality.

Despite its horror trappings, Navarro emphasized that There’s a Zombie Outside is not merely a traditional horror movie. Instead, she described it as a thoughtful meditation on identity, with Varrati using the genre as a vehicle to explore deeper themes about self-awareness and the nature of reality.
