by Barbara

Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is set to present the Hindi-language version of the highly praised Malayalam thriller Footage, starring celebrated actress Manju Warrier. Originally released in Kerala last year, the found-footage film garnered critical acclaim and will now make its nationwide theatrical debut.

Directed by veteran editor Saiju Sreedharan, known for his work on the National Film Award-winning Maheshinte Prathikaaram and the popular Kumbalangi Nights, Footage marks Sreedharan’s directorial debut. The film features Warrier in the lead role alongside emerging actors Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok.

The plot centers around a YouTube vlogging couple, portrayed by Nair and Ashok, who investigate the mysterious employer of their helper during the COVID-19 lockdown. Their search takes them to a remote island, setting the stage for an unexpected and thrilling adventure. Kashyap, impressed by the Malayalam version, praised its innovative storytelling approach, particularly the dual-perspective narrative. “It’s exciting to see young filmmakers in the Malayalam industry pushing boundaries and exploring new ways of storytelling,” Kashyap said.

Warrier, whose recent projects include Thunivu, Asuran, and Lucifer, spoke about the challenges and thrills of working within the found footage format. “The format allowed the film to unfold through the characters’ own video recordings, creating an immersive experience,” she shared.

The Hindi version of Footage is produced by Movie Bucket and distributed by Flip Films in partnership with Cinepolis. The film follows Kashyap’s recent support of Tiger’s Pond, the first Kannada film to screen at this year’s Berlinale. Flip Films, known for distributing festival hits such as Kastoori and Eeb Allay Ooo, is also behind this release.

Sreedharan expressed his gratitude for Kashyap and Cinepolis’s support in bringing the film to a wider Hindi-speaking audience. Ashok emphasized that Kashyap’s endorsement validates the film’s technical and aesthetic merits, while Nair highlighted the team’s dedication in bringing the film to life.

Footage will hit theaters on March 7.
