Ana Lily Amirpour to Adapt Basketful of Heads with Natasha Lyonne

Ana Lily Amirpour, the visionary director behind A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, will helm the adaptation of Joe Hill’s horror comic Basketful of Heads, with Natasha Lyonne attached to star. Bluestone Entertainment has secured the rights to the graphic novel.

Basketful of Heads, a seven-issue series published in 2017 by DC’s Hill House imprint, centers on June Branch, a woman who discovers a chilling ability: every criminal she kills leaves behind a talking head. As she accumulates more severed heads, each one adds a new voice, creating a macabre chorus. The series is known for its blend of dark humor, horror, and the surreal.

Bluestone Entertainment will finance the project, which blends action, horror, and comedy. Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans are set to produce under their Weed Road banner, with Shiva Nassab, Bluestone’s Director of Development, overseeing the project. Lyonne will also produce through her Animal Pictures production company, alongside executive producer Dannah Shinder. Richard Saperstein, Brooke Saperstein, and Annie Saperstein will produce for Bluestone, while Beau Turpin will executive produce.

Lyonne, known for her roles in Poker Face and Orange Is the New Black, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, saying, “I’m thrilled to work with the ingenious auteur Ana Lily Amirpour. This is such beloved IP, and I’m grateful that Akiva and Bluestone brought it to us at Animal to develop. This one’s gonna be a knockout!”

Amirpour echoed her excitement, adding, “I’m very excited to team up with the wickedly funny and brilliant Natasha Lyonne. We will adapt this comic into a film and bring to life a new kind of antihero. June is pulled into a bizarre adventure that unleashes something inside her, turning her life inside out. It’s going to be darkly funny, surreal, and bloody as hell.”

Joe Hill, the prolific author known for works like The Black Phone and NOS4A2, continues to build his impressive legacy. He will release his fifth novel, King Sorrow, on October 21st, further cementing his place alongside his father, Stephen King, in the horror genre.
