by Barbara

Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem addressed the pressing issues faced by Palestinian Christians during a screening of the film Via Dolorosa at the United Nations. The documentary, which offers a poignant portrayal of the Christian presence in Palestine, explores the lives, struggles, and resilience of Palestinian Christians.

The film is narrated from the perspective of local Christians, shedding light on key moments in their history and the ongoing challenges that shape their identity. Patriarch Theophilos expressed his gratitude for the support received from various international organizations, including the World Council of Churches and the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine.

“The economic situation continues to deteriorate due to the absence of pilgrims, the lack of job opportunities, and the ongoing security instability in the West Bank and Jerusalem,” the patriarch remarked, reflecting on the difficult circumstances facing the region’s Christian community.

Filmmaker Amira Hanania, who introduced the film, emphasized its groundbreaking nature, noting that it is the first documentary to tell the history of Palestinian Christianity through the eyes of the Christians themselves. “It tells their story as they have lived it — free from distortion, free from erasure,” Hanania said. “This film is a living testament to Palestinian Christians’ role in the fight for justice, standing as a rebuttal to those who attempt to erase their identity from the global stage.”

Father Ibrahim Faltas, vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land, shared his personal experiences, reflecting on the hardships faced by Christians in the region. “Living in Palestine is a part of sorrow,” he said, having lived there for 36 years and witnessed significant events, including the first and second intifadas and the siege of the Church of the Nativity. He noted the ongoing exodus of Christians from Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth due to increasing challenges.

In an interview following the screening, Patriarch Theophilos underscored the responsibility of Christians to raise their voices and advocate for the preservation of Jerusalem’s Christian identity. “Jerusalem is the only place that safeguards the values of the Bible,” he affirmed, highlighting the city’s critical role in maintaining the Christian faith.

The event served as a reminder of the enduring struggles faced by Palestinian Christians, as well as their commitment to keeping their history and identity alive amid ongoing adversity.
