The highly anticipated sequel Moana 2, the follow-up to the Oscar-nominated film about a Polynesian teenager embarking on a perilous journey to break an ancient curse, will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting March 12.
Originally conceived as a Disney+ TV series, Moana 2 underwent a transformation into a full-length feature film with a theatrical release. This shift was viewed as a strategic move by Disney, aimed at maximizing revenue and capitalizing on the film’s potential. The decision proved successful, with Moana 2 grossing over $1 billion worldwide, securing its place as the third-highest-grossing film of 2024.
The film brings Moana and the demigod Maui back together three years after their original adventure, embarking on a vast new journey with a crew of unexpected allies. When Moana receives an urgent call from her wayfinding ancestors, she must venture into the far seas of Oceania, navigating treacherous, forgotten waters on a mission that will push her to her limits.
Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller—marking their directorial debuts—the film features a new creative team. While Lin-Manuel Miranda, who composed the music for the first film, did not return, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear were brought in to craft the soundtrack for the sequel.
Auli’i Cravalho reprises her role as Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns as the mischievous Maui. The supporting cast includes Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, and Rose Matafeo.
Chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the sequel for its visual vibrancy, describing the film as “a feast for the eyes,” with engaging monsters and dynamic action sequences, despite Moana’s character facing fewer personal challenges than in the original film.
