Disney+ Shelves “Tiana” TV Show After Five Years in Development Hell

by Barbara

In a major blow to fans of Princess Tiana, Disney has officially canceled its long-anticipated TV series Tiana, a continuation of The Princess and the Frog saga. After spending five years in limbo, the show is no longer in development.

The project was first announced alongside several other Disney+ shows in 2020, promising sequels and specials inspired by animated films such as Dug Days, Baymax!, and Zootopia+. While those shows came to fruition, Tiana has remained silent, leaving fans with little information since its initial reveal.

The last update on the series came in 2023, when it was revealed that Joyce Sherri would serve as the head writer and share co-directing duties with Steve Anderson. At the time, Disney admitted that work on Tiana had not even begun, with only concept art shared as a preview.

Now, the cancellation of the show comes as part of a broader strategic shift away from “original longform content for streaming,” a term that has left many in the industry scratching their heads. Disney has cited Baymax! and Zootopia+ as examples of successful shortform content, suggesting a new focus on shorter programming rather than full-length series or films.

This shift has sparked confusion and concern. Does this mean other upcoming series, like Daredevil: Born Again or X-Men 97, could be canceled? Will Disney+ move away from producing full-length shows altogether? The implications remain unclear, though fans are hoping Tiana may still have a future.

There’s a glimmer of hope that the Tiana project could be reworked into a standalone feature, potentially even leading to a theatrical release. While it remains to be seen what will happen, fans can only hope that Princess Tiana’s story will eventually find its way to audiences—just not in the form they expected.
