Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film The Substance made a significant impact at the Academy Awards, securing five nominations, a rare achievement for the horror genre. While the film did not take home the coveted Best Picture award, it emerged victorious in one category: Best Makeup & Hairstyling.
The film, which stars Demi Moore and delves into the terrifying realities of aging within the entertainment industry, triumphed over contenders like A Different Man, Emilia Pérez, Nosferatu, and Wicked. The Oscar marks a milestone as the first Academy Award won by a film distributed by Mubi.
Pierre-Olivier Persin, one of the makeup artists behind the film, delivered the acceptance speech, thanking director Fargeat for her passion for practical effects and makeup. He was joined by fellow artists Stéphanie Guillon and Marilyne Scarselli in receiving the honor.
The Substance was also nominated for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Picture, though it ultimately did not win in those categories, which were dominated by Anora.
For those eager to watch the film, The Substance is available for streaming exclusively on Mubi’s platform. It can also be rented or purchased on major digital outlets and is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD.
