In a bizarre turn of events following the 97th Academy Awards, the filmmakers behind the Best Picture-winning film Kissing The Martinet are facing public outcry after fans discovered the movie was entirely fictional.
Film critic Alexander Van Wyk, who had praised Kissing The Martinet as his top movie of 2024, expressed his disbelief upon learning that the film never existed. “I can’t believe Kissing The Martinet, my favorite movie of 2024, is not a real movie,” Van Wyk stated, his voice tinged with frustration. “There should be some sort of safeguard implemented next year to ensure the films we’re pretending to have seen really exist. Next, you’re gonna tell me that my favorite film of all time, The Swan’s Mistress, isn’t real either.”
Despite the revelation, Van Wyk admitted that he still fondly recalled a specific scene from the nonexistent film, where a character—possibly named Melonia DuMont—engaged in a memorable kiss with the martinet. “I still think that scene was very well done,” he added wistfully, acknowledging the oddity of his continued affection for a movie that was never made.
As the controversy unfolds, many are left questioning the integrity of this year’s awards and whether further measures should be introduced to verify the authenticity of nominated films.
