Ahead of its highly anticipated world premiere at this year’s SXSW, Annapurna Sriram’s “Fucktoys” has dropped its exclusive trailer, offering a glimpse into a wild, grindhouse-style adventure set in Trashtown, USA. The film follows the journey of a woman named AP (played by Sriram), who, after losing a tooth and falling under a mysterious curse, is told that she can lift it with a modest payment of $1,000 and an animal sacrifice. Desperate to survive, AP plunges into the gritty depths of Trashtown to earn the money she needs.
The trailer hints at the film’s bold, outrageous tone and striking 16mm cinematography, showcasing AP’s encounters with psychics and her defiant declaration, “I love trash.” The official synopsis promises an irreverent, dark comedy filled with absurd situations and eccentric characters, each more outlandish than the last. “Fucktoys” is described as a campy exploration of intimacy, exploitation, and class in a pre-millennium alternate universe.
In addition to writing, directing, and starring in the film, Sriram’s vision is brought to life with an ensemble cast that includes rapper Big Freedia, Sadie Scott (“Spoiler Alert”), Francois Arnaud (“The Borgias”), Damian Young (“Edge of Darkness”), and Brandon Flynn (“13 Reasons Why”). Executive producers include Sriram, Timothy Petryni (“Succession”), Lizzie Goodman (“When I Consume You”), and Jean Louis Droulers (“NOiSE”), with Heather Buckley (“We Are Still Here”), Sarah Wielusz (“Caroline Polachek: Door”), and Alex Hidalgo (“Dorian Electra – Man To Man”) serving as co-executive producers.
“Fucktoys” is set to make its world premiere at SXSW on March 9.
