HBO’s much-anticipated Harry Potter TV adaptation is gaining momentum, with new casting rumors intensifying fan excitement. Reports indicate that Paapa Essiedu and Janet McTeer are in negotiations to play two of the franchise’s most iconic characters: Professor Severus Snape and Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Although HBO has yet to officially confirm these casting decisions, sources close to the production, including Deadline, suggest that deals for both actors are close to being finalized. If confirmed, Essiedu and McTeer would join John Lithgow, who has already been officially cast as Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow, who expressed his surprise at landing the role, shared his enthusiasm for stepping into the world of Harry Potter, saying he is “very excited” for the opportunity.
Essiedu, known for his roles in I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project, and Gangs of London, has garnered attention for his powerful and nuanced performances. At 34, he would be a few years older than Snape’s character at the beginning of the series but could bring a fresh interpretation to the beloved role, previously portrayed by the late Alan Rickman.
McTeer, a two-time Academy Award nominee for Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs, is said to have the authority needed to portray the stern yet caring McGonagall, a role immortalized by Maggie Smith in the original films. McTeer’s recent work in Ozark, The Old Man, and Into the Storm demonstrates her ability to command the screen with understated strength, making her a fitting choice for the part.
HBO has been cautious in addressing the growing wave of casting rumors, with a spokesperson stating, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
The Harry Potter series, which was announced in April 2023, will adapt each of the seven books into its own season, with a projected premiere window in late 2026 or early 2027. The series will be led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession and Killing Eve.
As speculation around the cast continues to swirl, fans are also championing potential candidates for Voldemort, with Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy emerging as a popular choice. Even Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed the Dark Lord in the original films, has endorsed the idea.
With over 32,000 child actors reportedly auditioning for the core trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, the Harry Potter TV series is slowly taking shape. Whether these casting rumors are confirmed or not, one thing is clear: the anticipation for the show is reaching a fever pitch.
