In One of Them Days, a race against time sets the stage for a rollercoaster of comedy and camaraderie, as two best friends fight to stave off eviction in a day filled with misunderstandings and unlikely challenges. The film follows Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), roommates living in a modest apartment in LA’s Baldwin Village. Their already hectic lives take a turn for the worse when Alyssa’s irresponsible boyfriend spends their rent money, leaving the women with only a few hours to come up with the cash.
Despite its familiar premise, One of Them Days distinguishes itself with a vibrant color palette and a lively, albeit uneven, narrative. The film’s tone is playful and cartoonish, yet it never shies away from explicit, bold dialogue that adds a raw edge to the humor. What truly elevates this lively romp is the palpable chemistry between Palmer, best known for Nope, and singer SZA, who makes her acting debut in this film. Their interactions crackle with energy, making their friendship the heart of the story.
While Dreux’s romantic subplot with the mysterious Maniac (Patrick Cage) adds a layer of intrigue, it’s the dynamic between the two women that remains the film’s strongest and most compelling element. With a perfect balance of comedy and emotional depth, One of Them Days is a fun, fast-paced exploration of friendship, love, and the lengths one will go to when faced with a crisis.
Now playing in UK, Irish, and Australian cinemas.
