Apple TV+ Drops Trailer for ‘Government Cheese’

by Barbara

Apple TV+ has released the trailer for Government Cheese, a unique crime-comedy series starring and executive produced by David Oyelowo. The ten-episode series, set in the San Fernando Valley of 1969, explores themes of family, redemption, and second chances with a surrealist twist.

Oyelowo takes on the role of Hampton Chambers, a recently released convict eager to reintegrate with his wife, Astoria (Simone Missick), and sons, Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston). However, his return is anything but smooth, as he finds his family has adapted to life without him. Determined to reclaim his place, Hampton introduces an unusual invention—a drill that sharpens itself while in use—hoping it will elevate his family’s status in Chatsworth. Complicating matters further, he is also entangled in debts to local gangsters.

“A second chance is never simple,” warns the show’s tagline. Oyelowo describes the series as a “parabolic, surrealist, absurdist family comedy,” emphasizing its distinct storytelling approach. “I hadn’t seen that before,” he shared in an interview.

The show is co-created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, with Hunter drawing inspiration from his own life experiences. “My dad was incarcerated, but whenever we would see him, he had all these ideas of how he was going to do these different things,” Hunter revealed. “He was very optimistic and very creative.”

Government Cheese premieres on April 16 with a four-episode release, followed by weekly installments concluding on May 28 on Apple TV+.
