The BBC has secured the rights to Families Like Ours, an emotionally gripping near-future apocalyptic drama directed by acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, known for his Academy Award and BAFTA-winning work.

Sue Deeks, the BBC’s head of program acquisition, described the series as “a beautifully constructed, thought-provoking drama about what happens when people are confronted by the inconceivable, and forced to make seemingly impossible choices.”

Set in a Denmark ravaged by rising sea levels, Families Like Ours depicts a future where the nation is forced to evacuate. The wealthy escape to affluent countries, while the less fortunate must navigate government-funded relocation efforts that often lead to the separation of families.

The story follows Laura, a high school student nearing graduation, portrayed by Amaryllis August. As news of the evacuation breaks, Laura is faced with an agonizing decision: should she stay with her divorced parents or follow the boy she has fallen in love with?

Filmed on location across Denmark, Sweden, France, Romania, and the Czech Republic, Families Like Ours premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Vinterberg expressed his excitement about the series’ UK debut, noting his strong emotional connection to the country.

“I have a deepfelt connection with the UK and as you will see, it also plays a part in this series,” Vinterberg said. “I am eager to see how a new audience will receive Families Like Ours, and I am very thankful to the BBC for delivering this story to a nation I feel such a close kinship with.”

The seven-episode drama, each running an hour, will be available for streaming on the BBC iPlayer and broadcast on BBC Four.

Vinterberg’s renowned directorial portfolio includes The Celebration, Submarino, The Hunt, Far from the Madding Crowd, and Another Round.
