Tickets for Disney’s highly anticipated live-action Snow White are now on sale, accompanied by a fresh wave of promotional material, including a new full-length trailer, a teaser highlighting the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot), and a series of character posters.
The latest trailer showcases new footage of Rachel Zegler as the titular princess, depicting her arrival in the Enchanted Forest and her first encounter with the seven companions who will aid her journey. Meanwhile, the teaser focuses on the film’s antagonist, the Queen, who erupts in fury upon discovering that her stepdaughter is still alive and remains the “fairest of them all.” The clip also offers a glimpse of the villain’s transformation into her infamous “old crone” disguise as she lures Snow White with a poisoned apple.
Director Marc Webb expressed his excitement about the film’s release, stating, “I am so excited for audiences and fans around the world to see this sneak peek and to revisit the magical world of Snow White. Our goal has always been to honor the original animated film, and we are extremely grateful to the team of amazing artists – from puppeteers to voice actors and motion capture technicians – for bringing these magical, charming characters to life in such a unique way.”
Box Office Projections Raise Concerns
Despite the film’s high-profile marketing push, early box office projections indicate a potentially underwhelming debut. Snow White is currently tracking for an opening weekend between $53 million and $63 million. While these figures would typically be considered solid, they may fall short given the film’s substantial budget, which has reportedly ballooned to $250 million, with some estimates suggesting it reached as high as $269.4 million by the end of 2023.
With such a hefty production cost, the film will need to perform exceptionally well both domestically and internationally to avoid financial disappointment. If projections do not improve as the March release date approaches, Disney could be facing a significant box office setback.
Ongoing Controversy Surrounding the Film
From its inception, the Snow White remake has been at the center of controversy. Criticism initially emerged when Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, who is not involved in the project, called the decision to remake the animated classic “backwards” during a podcast interview. His remarks sparked debate over how the film would handle the depiction of Snow White’s seven companions.
In response, Disney addressed these concerns, stating, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
Directed by Marc Webb, Snow White features a screenplay by Erin Cressida Wilson and is produced by Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff, with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer. The film introduces all-new original songs by award-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, along with a score by Jeff Morrow.
The cast includes Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, Andrew Barth Feldman as Dopey, Tituss Burgess as Bashful, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, Jason Kravits as Sneezy, George Salazar as Happy, Jeremy Swift as Doc, and Andrew Grotelueschen as Sleepy.
Snow White is set to premiere in theaters on March 21. Whether the film can overcome its challenges and resonate with audiences remains to be seen.
