Sony’s highly anticipated film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, will now hit theaters later than initially planned. The movie, directed by Kogonada, has been rescheduled for a September 19 release, shifting from its original date of May 9.
The ensemble cast includes Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Hamish Linklater, with a screenplay by Seth Reiss, best known for his work on The Menu.
The rescheduled release date places A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in competition with Universal’s horror film Him, starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, and 20th Century Studios’ Ella McCay, directed by James L. Brooks and featuring Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, and Ayo Edebiri. The original May release would have seen the film face off against A24’s Friendship, starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, as well as Marvel’s Thunderbolts in its second weekend.
Produced by Imperative Entertainment and 30West, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey tells the story of two strangers whose lives unexpectedly intertwine. Reiss, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Ryan Friedkin, and Youree Henley serve as producers.
Kogonada, known for his direction of After Yang (2021), which also starred Colin Farrell, as well as his work on Pachinko, helms the film.
For Robbie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey marks her first major release since the summer of 2023. She previously appeared in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and Greta Gerwig’s box-office hit Barbie. Farrell, meanwhile, recently starred in HBO’s The Penguin and earned an Oscar nomination for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin.
