Foton Distribution has unveiled the first trailer for The Uninvited, a dramedy directed and written by Nadia Conners. The film, set for release on May 9, follows a chaotic and heartfelt narrative, revolving around a stranger who unexpectedly crashes a party, leading to a series of comedic and dramatic events.
Starring Walton Goggins, Pedro Pascal, Rufus Sewell, Elizabeth Reaser, Lois Smith, Eva De Dominici, Kate Comer, Annie Korzen, and Emma West, The Uninvited features a diverse ensemble cast. Conners also wrote the screenplay, while Ross Clarke, Carlos Cuscó, Rosie Fellner, and Ariel Taboada produced the project.
The trailer begins with a married couple, Rose and Sammy, preparing for a social gathering at their home. However, their plans are interrupted when an elderly woman, Helen, unexpectedly arrives, claiming that the house is hers. As party guests start to arrive, tensions rise between the couple and Helen, while unresolved dynamics among the characters unfold. Sammy and Rose struggle with communication issues in their relationship, and the presence of a charming guest, Lucien (played by Pascal), hints at a potential past history with Rose.
Though the initial premise seems to set the stage for a lighthearted comedy, The Uninvited leans heavily into dramatic territory. While the disruption of a party by an uninvited guest may offer moments of humor, the narrative explores deeper emotional currents. As Helen disrupts their gathering, Rose begins reflecting on her relationship with her late mother, and both Rose and Sammy develop a newfound compassion for the elderly woman despite the chaos she causes.
The trailer highlights the film’s strong early reviews, which could help drive its success upon release. With only seven critics offering their take so far, the film holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Mae Abdulbaki of ScreenRant awarded the film a 7/10 following its 2024 debut at SXSW, praising Conners’ confident direction and the film’s exploration of issues women face as they age gracefully.
For audiences familiar with Walton Goggins’ portrayal of a more eccentric character in The White Lotus, his role in The Uninvited offers a striking departure, adding a layer of intrigue to the film’s release. Moreover, with Pedro Pascal currently captivating audiences in The Last of Us as Joel, the timing of the film’s release offers viewers a chance to see both Goggins and Pascal in vastly different roles.
