Disney is set to introduce a new generation to the heartwarming Hawaiian tale of “ohana” with its upcoming live-action remake of the 2002 animated classic Lilo & Stitch. The first official trailer for the highly anticipated film has arrived, offering a glimpse into the world of Lilo, Stitch, and their unforgettable adventure.
This marks the second live-action remake from Disney this year, following the upcoming Snow White film, set to release later this month. Like its animated predecessor, Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a young Hawaiian orphan, Lilo, who makes a heartfelt wish for a best friend. Her wish comes true when a “falling star” crashes into Earth, revealing itself to be an extraterrestrial, dog-like creature. Lilo adopts the creature, names him Stitch, and quickly learns that her new companion has a knack for chaos. The trailer brings back iconic songs, including an Elvis Presley hit and the beloved “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,” both featured in the original film.
The live-action remake is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who previously helmed the hit A24 film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Chris Sanders, the director of the original Lilo & Stitch, returns to voice the character of Stitch, adding a layer of continuity to the new version of the story.
In recent years, Disney has ventured into live-action adaptations of several of its animated classics, including The Lion King, Aladdin, Dumbo, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. While these remakes have garnered mixed critical and commercial success, they have generally seen diminishing returns over time. As Lilo & Stitch prepares for its theatrical release, it remains to be seen how it will fare in the live-action remake trend—especially considering this is the first trailer to be released just two months before the film’s debut.
The live-action Lilo & Stitch will hit theaters on May 23, 2025.
