Matthew Macfadyen, the acclaimed 50-year-old Emmy-winning actor, has secured his next major television role in the upcoming Legacy of Spies series, based on the iconic spy novels of John le Carré. Macfadyen will portray the esteemed career intelligence officer, George Smiley, in this highly anticipated project.
The Legacy of Spies series is described as a blend of several of le Carré’s celebrated works, including The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honorable Schoolboy, and others, including some unpublished material. The series is set to capture the intricate web of espionage and betrayal that le Carré is renowned for.
The project is being produced by The Ink Factory, which holds the rights to le Carré’s literary estate, with distribution by Fifth Season across both Europe and the United States.
Macfadyen’s portrayal of George Smiley follows in the footsteps of several notable actors who have taken on the role, including Rupert Davies in the 1965 film The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Gary Oldman in the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Alec Guinness in the 1979 TV miniseries Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
