Netflix has made two major decisions regarding its original programming: the sports comedy Running Point has been renewed for a second season, while the spy thriller The Recruit has been canceled after its sophomore run.
Running Point Scores Big with Fans, Gets Early Renewal
In a swift move, Netflix has greenlit a second season of Running Point, just one week after its debut. The series, co-created by Mindy Kaling, centers on Isla Gordon (played by Kate Hudson), a driven woman who is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team after her brother resigns due to a scandal. Set against the backdrop of the LA Lakers and their president Jeanie Buss, Running Point has captured the attention of viewers worldwide.
With 9.3 million views during its opening weekend and ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 83 countries, the show has quickly gained a loyal audience. Mindy Kaling expressed her excitement about the renewal, saying, “We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a Season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show. We still cannot believe the response from audiences — thank you to everyone who has watched!”
The first season features a star-studded cast, including Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Max Greenfield, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, and Justin Theroux.
The Recruit Bids Farewell After Short Run
In contrast, The Recruit will not be returning for a third season. Despite positive reception for its second season and a solid performance in the weekly top 10, Netflix has decided to end the show. The Recruit, which follows the adventures of Owen Hendricks (played by Noah Centineo), premiered its second season to strong numbers, reaching second place in the weekly charts. However, the series’ performance wasn’t enough to warrant a renewal.
Creator Alexi Hawley reflected on the show’s cancellation on social media, acknowledging the difficulties faced during production, particularly the challenges posed by the pandemic. Despite these hurdles, The Recruit developed a loyal fanbase, and Hawley expressed hopes for a movie to wrap up the series. Whether this will come to fruition remains uncertain.
As Netflix continues to shape its original content, these contrasting decisions highlight the unpredictable nature of the streaming industry.
