Ronald D. Moore Leads ‘God of War’ TV Adaptation for Amazon

by Barbara

Renowned screenwriter Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed for his work on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, is currently developing a TV adaptation of the popular video game God of War. Moore confirmed the project during an appearance on The Sackhoff Show, hosted by actress Katee Sackhoff.

Moore revealed that Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the highly anticipated series. He also shared his experience trying out the game, admitting that the controls were more complicated than the classic arcade games he’s accustomed to—an amusing admission that paints Moore as a relatable “dad trying his best.”

This revelation comes amid recent speculation that the God of War TV series had undergone a major reset. Sony officially announced the adaptation in 2022, but details about the show’s development have remained scarce. With Amazon committing to a two-season order, it’s clear the streaming giant is confident in the project’s potential.

The adaptation is part of a growing trend of high-budget video game-to-TV adaptations, a shift away from the low-budget, often unsuccessful adaptations of the ’90s and ’00s. Shows like The Last of Us and Fallout have seen tremendous commercial and critical success, and Moore’s involvement with God of War has only heightened expectations.

While specific details about the series’ plot, setting, and characters remain under wraps, questions remain about which era of God of War the show will explore. Will it focus on Kratos’ epic journey through Greece (from the original God of War trilogy), or will Moore dive into the more introspective, father-son dynamic introduced in God of War 2018 and Ragnarok? Fans are hopeful for the former, as many are eager to see the brutal, rage-filled Kratos of earlier games return to the screen.

Though information about the adaptation is limited, Moore’s pedigree raises hopes that the series will capture the essence of God of War. A release date has yet to be announced, but with high expectations and Moore at the helm, all eyes will be on the show’s eventual debut.
