by Barbara

Indie Rights has secured the worldwide distribution rights to Vincent, the atmospheric arthouse dark comedy by Australian filmmaker Alan King, it was announced during Hong Kong FilMart.

The film, which marks both King’s directorial debut and features him in the lead role as the troubled writer Vincent Tremblay, follows its protagonist as he retreats to a remote location to finish his first novel. However, his solitude is soon disturbed by a powerful, mysterious force.

King explains, “With Vincent, my intention was to blur the lines between reality and fantasy. Many of the events and themes in the film serve as metaphoric representations of addiction, isolation, mental health, friendships, family, social prejudices, and identity.”

The film boasts a talented cast including Christopher Kirby (The Matrix Reloaded, Late Night With the Devil), Mercia Deane-Johns (Last Cab to Darwin), Greg Fleet (Wolf Creek), and Zoe Bertram (Under the Lighthouse Dancing). Newcomers Bill Evans and Paree Brar also join the ensemble.

Shot over seven days in rural Victoria, Australia, Vincent was produced by King alongside Angela Ling through their production company, White Cube Picture Lab, with support from Creative Arts Victoria and Harbor Entertainment.

King, who has previously directed award-winning short films Wild Will and Goldfield, cites filmmaking legends David Lynch, Lars von Trier, and Stanley Kubrick as major influences. He reflects, “The ambiguity in their films resonates deeply, sparking discussion and debate long after the credits roll.”

Since its world premiere at the 2024 Cinequest International Film Festival, Vincent has garnered several accolades, including Best Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival and Best Fantasy Film at FilmHaus Berlin. King’s performance in the film earned him the Best Feature Performance award at the Santiago International Horror Film Festival.

The distribution deal was negotiated by Philippe Galliano of the Movie Agency on behalf of White Cube Picture Lab.
