Netflix has confirmed the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2 is on the way, releasing a new teaser trailer that shows Adam Sandler returning to his comedic golfing roots. The sequel to the beloved 1996 hit promises more of the same wacky antics and charm from the original, but there’s one noticeable absence from the teaser: pro wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, also known as MJF.
The original Happy Gilmore quickly became one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic films, featuring the story of a failed hockey player who discovers a hidden talent for golf—though he struggles with the patience and temper required for the sport. Thanks to his coach Chubbs (played by the late Carl Weathers), Happy Gilmore is introduced to the world of professional golf, humorously learning “it’s all in the hips.” Nearly three decades later, Happy is back for round two on Netflix.
Despite Weathers’ passing in February 2024, many of the original cast members are returning. Julie Bowen will reprise her role as Virginia Venit, Ben Stiller returns as the hilarious Hal L, and Christopher McDonald is back as the villainous Shooter McGavin. The trailer also introduces new faces, including No Bunny, who plays Happy’s caddie.
However, one of the most notable additions to the cast—MJF—was conspicuously absent from the teaser. Fans have expressed confusion and disappointment, wondering where the wrestling star fits into the sequel. Speculation about his role is rife, with many expecting MJF to portray Shooter McGavin’s son, though that remains unconfirmed. There were even rumors that NFL star Travis Kelce might be making a cameo in that role, but it is still unclear whether this will be the case.
While some fans have joked that MJF may have been cut from the film, others continue to wonder if his character will appear in the final version. His absence in the trailer has certainly left viewers questioning what role he will eventually play in the story.
The plot remains under wraps, with Netflix only teasing that Happy Gilmore is “back.” From the brief footage in the teaser, it looks like Happy has taken a break from golfing and is gearing up for a return to the sport. Virginia, now happily married to Happy, encourages him to get back on the course, reminding him that the world still needs to see the golfer she fell in love with.
The teaser concludes with the confirmation that Happy Gilmore 2 will be available to stream on Netflix starting July 25, 2025.
