When Lost marked its 20th anniversary last year, it sparked a wave of nostalgia and anticipation for J.J. Abrams’ next big television project. The release of all 121 episodes on Netflix allowed a new generation of viewers to dive into the supernatural survival drama, reigniting old discussions about the show’s mysteries. In addition to revisiting the iconic series, fans couldn’t help but wonder when Abrams would make his long-awaited return to the small screen. That time has finally come with Duster, a 1970s-set action series featuring Abrams’ Lost collaborator Josh Holloway, best known for playing Sawyer.
Duster follows Holloway as Jim, a getaway driver caught between two powerful forces: Keith David’s crime boss Ezra “Sax” Saxon and FBI agent Nina, portrayed by Rachel Hilson, the bureau’s first Black female agent. Tasked with helping take down a crime syndicate, Jim’s moral dilemmas and dangerous alliances fuel the high-stakes narrative.
The trailer for Duster is a thrilling showcase of 70s-inspired action, complete with sex, violence, classic cars, and the era’s distinct aesthetic. The series, co-created by Abrams and LaToya Morgan (known for her work on The Walking Dead), brings a nostalgic yet fresh twist to the action genre. True to Abrams’ style, the show promises intricate plot twists and gripping character dynamics. At the heart of it all is Holloway’s portrayal of Jim, who finds himself torn between loyalty to the mob and the chance to help the determined FBI agent.
Though Abrams has remained active as an executive producer on several projects in recent years, including Presumed Innocent, Batman: Caped Crusader, and Lovecraft Country, Duster marks his return to writing since his work on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker nearly six years ago. Premiering on Max in the U.S. on May 15, the show promises to be a standout in Abrams’ storied career.
In 20 years, fans may very well find themselves unraveling the mysteries of Duster, just as they did with Lost, wondering how a crime syndicate in 1972 relates to the mysteries surrounding Oceanic Airlines Flight 815. Until then, the intrigue—and the red string—are sure to grow.
