‘The Empire Strikes Back’ to Open TCM Film Festival

by Barbara

The iconic Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, will open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film in celebration of its 45th anniversary.

Ben Mankiewicz, TCM’s primetime anchor, praised the film’s lasting impact, comparing it to another legendary sequel. “The Empire Strikes Back is like The Godfather Part II,” Mankiewicz said in a statement. “Yes, technically, they’re sequels—the second movie in a series. But they are so much more. The first Star Wars film in 1977 sparked a new era in Hollywood, inspiring a generation of movie lovers. Then, three years later, Empire arrived, and somehow, it might be even better. It’s a remarkable achievement and one of the greatest films in history.”

In addition to The Empire Strikes Back, the festival lineup includes classics such as The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Lady Eve, Cinderella, Apocalypse Now, Spirited Away, and Babe. Special guests set to appear include Michelle Pfeiffer, Rita Moreno, Bill Hader, Mario Cantone, and film critic Leonard Maltin.
