Filmmaking duo Dave Franco and Alison Brie, who previously collaborated on the heartwarming rom-com Somebody I Used to Know, are once again joining forces. This time, however, their partnership ventures into far darker territory. Their latest project, Together, is a body horror film that marks the directorial debut of Michael Shanks. Unlike their previous feel-good rom-com, Together explores the disturbing and possibly supernatural dynamics of a toxic, codependent relationship.
The film, which made waves at the Sundance Film Festival, was quickly picked up for distribution by Neon, the studio behind several chilling genre films. The first trailer, a haunting and cryptic preview, offers little in terms of explicit plot details, yet succeeds in creating an unsettling atmosphere that promises an intense viewing experience. With eerie visuals—such as Franco and Brie locked in intimate yet unsettling embraces, tense close-ups of forest-dwelling dogs, and a disturbing scene of Franco pulling a long hair from his mouth—Together is poised to captivate audiences with its strange and psychological terror.
Neon’s mastery of minimalistic, show-don’t-tell trailers is on full display here, echoing their previous marketing successes. The use of a haunting piano arrangement of Lakmé’s Flower Duet only adds to the surreal, nightmarish tone, heightening anticipation for what’s to come. While the trailer does not give away the plot, it hints at a deeply unsettling journey for the couple, as their love takes a horrifying turn.
For those seeking more insight into the story, the official synopsis provides additional clues: “Years into their relationship, Tim (Franco) and Millie (Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the countryside, leaving behind everything but each other. But a terrifying, unnatural force soon enters their lives, threatening to unravel not only their bond but their very bodies and minds.”
Together is set for a U.S. release on August 1st, while fans in the UK will have to wait for a distributor to pick up the film for local release. Given its eerie tone, British viewers might want to brace themselves—Together promises to be a terrifying ride into the heart of love, horror, and the unknown.
